Crochet Purse Tutorial

Crochet Purses is something that I really enjoy making and this Crochet Clutch that I am going to show you, in this new video tutorial, was no exception.

Mainly because it is actually pretty simple to make, due to it’s small size and because it requires no reinforcement and no lining,  which we all know can be a challenge when making a Crochet Bag.

For this Crochet Clutch I wanted to use a fancy but somewhat easy stitch and one that would be thick enough to save me from having to attach lining to the bag.

So after a few days of research and testing, I came up (or at least I think I did) with a stitch of my own which I named the Slanting Bead Stitch. If anyone has come across this stitch before, please feel free to correct me. I will renounce my rights immediately I promise.

So the slanting bead stitch is very similar to the bead stitch except for two things. To create a simple Bead stitch you skip a stitch on the foundation row, then place one double crochet in the next stitch and then you yarn over your hook and go underneath the post of the double crochet.

You then yarn over and pull a loop three times and you are actually working around that double crochet post without inserting your hook in any foundation stitch.

To make the Slanting Bead Stitch you also skip a stich and place a double crochet in the next, but then you yarn over and insert your hook into the previous skipped stitch. You then yarn over and pull a loop three times.

To finish off you yarn over and pull through all seven loops on your hook.  This final part includes the second difference with the simple bead stitch, where you finish by yarning over and pulling through 6 loops on your hook and then yarning over again and pulling through the last two loops.

The insertion of the hook to the previous skipped stitch, is what gives a slope to the bead stitch and creates a diagonal alignment of puffy bumps, which I found really elegant. It also provides this thickness to the other wise lovely plain bead stitch, by filling the spaces between puffs.

With that said I think it time to see what tools and materials you will need in order to make this stylish Crochet Clutch Bag.

Supplies

    • Beige Polypropylene cord 3mm, (2skeins 100g 140mt)
    • Angular, Bronge Sew on purse clasp Bag Fastening Clasp Size: 225mm x 75mm approx (9″ x 3″)
    • Bronze Metal Chain Purse Shoulder Strap 120cm (47″)
    • Crochet hook size 3 / 6.5mm (US Size K/10.5)
    • Fishing line (fishing cord)
    • 1 Darning Needle that fits the frame holes (for the fishing cord)
    • 1 Bigger Darning Needle that fits your yarn
    • 8 Stitch Markers
    • Scissors

Tips:

  • I intentionally crochet this bag very tightly because I wanted to avoid having to use reinforcement of lining. I you prefer a looser softer bag you must reduce the number of chains by 3 or to be sure create a small swatch.
  • To join the sides of the purse I slip stitched them but you can use also use fishing line and a darning needle to sew them together with an invisible stitch.
