Donuts always bring on my mind Summers of my childhood, when we used to enjoy them on our evening walks, bought from some tiny store with the sign Homemade Donut Recipe, located in some small village in Halkidiki, served in white plastic balls, with the amazing taste everything we used to eat or drink, during our summer vacations, magically had.
I cannot go back to those beautiful years but I sure can enjoy delicious golden brown Greek Donuts drizzled with honey, made with a Homemade Donut Recipe, and I am sharing this Homemade Donut Recipe with you so that you can enjoy them as well!
- 1 cup of milk
- 4 tablespoons of olive oil
- 1 egg plus 1 yolk
- 4 tablespoons of sugar
- Lemon rinds
- 2 ½ cups of cake flour
- Olive oil for frying
- Honey and finely chopped walnuts for garnish
Beat the milk, the egg, the egg yolk, the sugar and the lemon rinds in a mixing bowl.
Add the flour, and mix well until you get a soft smooth dough.
Heat the oil in a deep pan/fryer (fill at least half the deep fryer with oil) until it reaches 180C degrees.
Take some dough with your right hand and clench your fist until a big drop of dough forms between your thumb and your forefinger.
Cut the drop of dough with a teaspoon so that it will fall into the fryer. Repeat until you fill the fryer.
Fry the Greek Donuts for approximately 3 minutes each, until they turn gold.
Remove from the oil with a slotted spoon and set them on a platter lined with a paper towel to absorb excess oil.
Drizzle them with honey, sprinkle some finely chopped walnuts on top and serve them while hot.
