But before we check our materials list and go on with the video, how would you like to find out about how did pumpkins got associated with Halloween?
Every October, carved pumpkins dominate the porches and entrances of houses in many parts of the western world. Engraved as shining faces and illuminated with candles, they mark the celebration of Halloween.
The tradition of decorating lanterns with the distinctive name “jack-o’-lantern,” is said to originate from a folk legend of Ireland, where they used to carve large turnips and potatoes. Irish immigrants brought the tradition to America, a land abundant in pumpkins, where it became an integral part of the Halloween celebration.
According to one of the versions of the story, once upon a time, a drunken adventurer named Stingy Jack, lived in Ireland. One day he deceived Satan to climb to an apple tree and when he got up, he carved a cross on the tree so that he could not get down. To finally release him he made the devil promise that when Jack dies, he will not claim his soul.
When after a few years Jack died, St. Peters refused to allow such a vagabond to enter paradise. The Devil, in turn, keeping his promise not to claim his soul, also refused to allow him to go to hell. So Jack was trapped in between, without having anywhere to go.
When he complained to the devil that he could not see his way in the dark, he mocked him by giving him the flame from Hell. Jack then carved a turnip, put the flame inside and began wandering endlessly on the Earth looking for a resting place.
He’s haunting figure became known as “Jack of the Lantern,” and over the years the name became “jack-o’-lantern”. And since Halloween was seen as a time when supernatural beings and the souls of the dead, roamed the earth, it is no wonder why he became a symbol of this Holiday.
